The Girl with Green Earing
The Girl with Eyes That Talk
The Girl with Bright Smile
Bangkok February 2011
The four paintings belong to an Arhat series painting inspired by 18 Arhat status of Tay Phuong Pagoda (The Accient Temple of The West) – Ha Noi – Vietnam.
Tay Phuong Pagoda is mostly famous for the statues it contains, magnificent wooden sculptures representing Buddhas like Arhats, who are middle-ranking Buddhist deities. One in particular portrays Sakyamuni in meditation at the foot of Tuyet Son (Snow Mountain). He was then leading a life of extremely severe ascetics, and his emaciated body, as represented by the statue, shows good knowledge by the artist of human anatomy. The figures of the Arhats each bear distinctive features which depict meditation in original aspects. All are impressive master piece works of art.

Hugh’s paintings are in rich dense colours infuse western pop art with the mysticism of the East. These sensual and vibrant works on canvas radiate with a warm Eastern palette that captures the beauty of a bygone time in the Vietnamese history. Hugh’s un-daunting portraits of affluent Vietnamese women of the early and mid 20th century exude a sense of fragility and evoke a mood of impending doom.
